The Attraction of Magnet

The Magnet program recognizes healthcare organizations that provide nursing excellence. According to the American Nurses Credentialing Center, seven of the top ten medical centers listed in U.S. News & World Report magazine’s 2006 Honor Roll of best hospitals were Magnet hospitals.

Organizations achieve Magnet status by demonstrating well-established structures and processes for evidence-based practice. They demonstrate this through an application that responds to Sources of Evidence, which are statements that request information, processes, descriptions, and/or examples, within the 14 Forces of Magnetism.

The application process takes months to complete and involves nurses at all levels of the organization. Medical centers and hospitals take on this challenge because of the benefits it offers. But before you do, you may want to evaluate your organization’s readiness with a quick Magnet assessment.
