Dilbert Rips Employee Engagement
Today’s Dilbert comic strip has the pointy-haired boss at a table with Dilbert on one side and Wally on the other. The boss says, “We need more of what the management experts call ‘employee engagement.’ I don’t know the details, but it has something to do with you idiots working harder for the same pay.”
“Is anything different on your end?” Dilbert asks.
“I think I’m supposed to be happier,” says the boss.
Motives matter, and if leaders embrace employee engagement—or Lean or Baldrige or any other improvement process—to improve the bottom line at all costs, their motives will breed cynicism and resistance among employees who have been conditioned, like the moles in Whack-a-Mole, to keep their heads down until the latest whacker gives up.
That won’t make the leaders/whackers any happier, it won’t engage employees, and it certainly won’t improve the organization’s performance.
