Coaching Leaders

Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google, said the best advice he ever got was to get a coach.

Donna Karlin coaches leaders. In a blog post for Fast Company, she talks about two areas she focuses on:

  • Always be learners, not in the sense of memorizing data but in looking for what you need to know that you don’t know to move forward.
  • You don’t need to know everything, but you need to complement your knowledge and skills with people who know what you don’t and can do what you can’t.

As Karlin writes, “The smartest leaders realize they don’t have to do things alone and know who they need to know to get the answers they need.”

Leaders rarely have allies, Karlin notes. A coach is an ally, someone to share fears, concerns, and insecurities with and to help see things with clarity and perspective.

We could all use that.
