Aligning with Strategies & Measures
The Veterans Affairs Cooperative Studies Program Clinical Research Pharmacy Coordinating Center (VACSP Center) won the Baldrige Award in 2009. It has four key strategic goals and 13 key performance indicators, which are listed on its balanced scorecard
.
One of the characteristics of many Baldrige Award winners is the simplicity of their strategies and key measures and how they are aligned. They have achieved this simplicity through years of hard work. Every organization I’ve worked with that used the Baldrige process to focus their strategic planning process and their measurement system on those key goals and indicators that would help them achieve their mission and vision started with too many goals and too many measures. They tried to do too many things and, as a result, they wasted resources on activities that did not support their mission and vision.
If you asked them to duplicate the VACSP Center’s scorecard, they could not do it. They lack the knowledge of what strategic goals are most important to achieving success and what key measures will tell them how they are doing on those goals. They can only acquire this knowledge by understanding what progress on their mission and vision would look like, what steps must be taken to achieve them, and how they would know if they were making progress.
The VACSP Center demonstrates that knowledge in their scorecard. To learn how they develop and refine their scorecard and their strategic goals and how they have been doing on their scorecard measures, check out the award application online by clicking here.
